Fermi, Enrico

(1901–1954). Italian experimental and theoretical physicist, remembered as the "architect of the nuclear age." He led research in the Manhattan Project that created the first nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1. For discovering transuranic elements and for work on induced radioactivity by neutron bombardment, Fermi received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938.
