redshift

Occurs when the observed light from an object appears to be of a longer wavelength (redder) than what is actually emitted. Redshift may be caused by the Doppler Effect, when emitting source of light moves away from an observer. Cosmological redshift, by comparison, is caused by the stretching of space in which light rays travel due to the expansion of the universe. See also blueshift.
