mass spectrometer

A spectrometer that measures the composition of samples by analyzing the mass to charge ratio (m/z) of components in the sample. To do this, the sample introduced into the spectrometer is ionized under high energy, and the various ions are then separated in a magnetic field and measured. The specific m/z signature of each ion is then used to identify the parent element or compound.
