cytosol

The fluid portion of the cytoplasm that is in every animal and plant cell. It surrounds all of the organelles of a cell. Most of the cell's metabolism takes place in the cytosol. It is made of water and fibrous proteins that play an important role in signal transduction pathways and act as intracellular receptors.
