English natural philosopher and geologist, born in Nottinghamshire (1724-1793). In 1750 he published A Treatise of Artificial Magnets, detailing his observations on the variations in forces between magnetic poles. He also demonstrated radiation pressure, adding support to Christian Huygens' argument that light consists of waves.
