Matthews, Drummond
[person]
English marine geophysicist, born in Porlock, Somerset (1931-1997). In 1962, Matthews participated in the International Indian Ocean Expedition and made a detailed survey of a submarine ridge that showed that the pattern of magnetic polarity of seafloor rocks surrounding the ridge was symmetric. This discovery contributed to the widespread acceptance of the plate tectonic theory. He also studied the structure and evolution of continental crust using deep crustal seismics.
