Landsteiner, Karl

(1868-1943) Austrian forensic researcher and physician who discovered ABO blood types in 1900, thereby enabling safe blood transfusion. Also, together with Alexander Wiener in 1937, he discovered the Rh antigen and three years later the role of Rh in pregnancy complications resulting from the mismatch between Rh typing of a mother and her fetus.
