A 2- to 7-year climatic cycle in the Tropical Pacific. In El Niño years, the trade winds die down, leading to a build-up of unusually warm water in the eastern Pacific Ocean, which results in increased rainfall in the southern United States and Peru and drought in Southeast Asia and Australia.
