(aka Johann Christian Doppler) Mathematician and physicist, born in Salzburg, Austria (1803-1853). Author of On the Coloured Light of the Binary Stars and Some Other Stars of the Heavens (1842), which introduced the principles behind the Doppler Effect and attempted to explain the apparent shift in wavelength of light emitted by a moving star.
