A professional society established in 1919, originally as part of the National Academy of Sciences, but now an independent organization. The mission of AGU is "to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity"; the primary means of achieving that mission is through hosting two annual meetings and publishing numerous journals.
