spontaneous generation

[noun]

The hypothesis that non-living matter can continuously give rise to biological organisms. The idea developed among ancient Greek philosophers, inspired by ideas of Anaximander (610–546 BCE) that humans had evolved from fish coming ultimately from the mud. It persisted for 24 centuries until finally laid to rest by experiments devised by Louis Pasteur (1822-1895 CE). Compare to abiogenesis.
